JOB DESCRIPTION

 

                                                        TEACHING ASSISTANT

 

Department:   Nursery School and Day Care

 

Reporting Relationship:  The Teaching Assistant reports to the Director of the Nursery School or designee.

 

Qualifications:  Minimum High School diploma or Associate Degree from an accredited college or university, and certification from the state.  One (1) year of experience with children.

 

General Job Description:  To assist the teacher in providing a warm and nurturing environment in which the child can grow physically, emotionally and intellectually.

 

Essential Functions:

·         To interact, initiate and encourage the children in the activities during the day.

·         To help the children control behavior using a positive, appropriate approach - always using consistent techniques.

·         To provide the nurturance but to help the children become independent.

·         To promote integral learning during snack times.

·         To help the children learn good social skills.

·         To maintain good communication with parents and to make each parent feel at ease at the preschool.

·         To assist the teacher in planning activities for the group and to offer suggestions and information about the children.

·         To develop a cooperative and supportive attitude within the room.

·         To assist the head teacher in record keeping by assisting on observations regarding the children’s health, behavior and development.

·         To function and to help building a supportive team.

·         Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children.

·         Evidence of emotional maturity and stability.

·         Evidence of sufficient security and judgment to handle crisis situations and to use supervision constructively.

·         Ability to recognize and to record significant individual and group behavior.

·         Ability to supervise aides and assistants.

 

Status:  Non-exempt

 

Physical Requirements:  Must be energetic, enthusiastic, creative, innovative, compassionate and nurturing.  Must be healthy, Doctor’s examination form required before starting work.  Must be able to lift children (30-40 pounds) and have good stamina and be able to keep up with the children.
